**** RFL WEEK IN REVIEW **** | ||
CREAM IS RISING TO THE TOP |
SLAB (8-2) and the Robust Romanians (7-3) won this week to gain some
separation from the rest of the League. The Black Sox and the Beavers
lost to fall into a group of 7 teams at 6-4.
Wang's Ferocious Undies are the new softest D in the League - giving up 30.7 points per game.
Clark's Bladerunners are now the stingiest D - allowing 22.1 ppg.
Gary's 12 Angry Men finally won their first RFL contest!
The top scoring teams: SLAB (37.6) and Romanians (35.8)
The lowest scoring teams: 12 Angry Men (16.4) and Brian (16.5)
The League scoring average is: 26.1
THE WACKY WEEK THAT WAS
Lawrence Phillips' welcome has been worn out in SF. LP is now rumored headed for upstate NY to butt heads with Antowain and Linton. Joey Galloway made his return to the Seattle lineup. DCIAC will benefit a *lot* from this windfall. Jeff Hostetler is now being considered as the next SF QB. Any takers?
The Squat Division went 2-2 against the Sh!t from Shinola
Division, and the Bubkus Division went 3-1 against the hapless Jack Division.
Enough random babbling... on to WIR #10!

**** GAME OF THE WEEK ****

12 Angry Men 28
KFaulk won one for the Iggster (Eigen, Iggy, Iggster)! After getting
caught from behind on his 90+ yard kickoff return in the first half,
KFaulk caught a TD pass in the 4th quarter. Gary also needed the 12
points from much-maligned TE Dudley - as the other 10 Angry Men
failed to carry their load. Brian's team was lead once again by Marcus -
while Dilfer and Dawkins also contributed nicely. 12 Angry Men is now
1-9. Brian falls to 2-8.
SCRUB W for Gary (1-0 in scrub games).

The South Side Black Sox 22
Joebob extends his winning streak to 4 games, and JoePa loses his 2nd in a row - as these two 6-4 teams are headed in opposite directions. Edgerrin and Ricky put up big yardage numbers for the Sox, but could not find the endzone. MiB's dynamic duo of Johnson-Westbrook hooked up for 21 points Sunday afternoon, and Peterson's FG in the 1st quarter of Sunday nitro finished off the Black Sox.

Tim snaps out of his 3-game losing streak by thrashing Ali's JIU. JIU has now lost 3 in a row - and are virtually eliminated from the postseason. FTaylor was the only Bug held scoreless in this game, as Harrison and McCaffrey returned to their high-scoring form. Flutie scored for the 10th straight game. For Ali, Elam was the lone "bright" spot.

After going 3-0 in scrub contests, Cals finally gets one helping of comeuppance and falls to 6-4. The Beavers received strong contributions from Gus, Randy, and Germane, but Brodz quite easily brushed the Beavers aside with Cris and the 2 George's. SLAB has now won 6 straight, stands at 8-2, and would be 10-0 if not for 2 scrub losses. Brodz had his sights on the all-time record for points in one game, put Cals' Beaver D had some pride and shut down Glenn on Monday night.

Upper West Side Stomp Mongers 45
Peyton Manning has scored in all 9 games the Colts have played - and Kevin even got a bonus TD from Huntley. But goose-eggs from the 4 other non-PK's doomed DCIAC against the balanced attack of UWSSM. Dylan won this game with his RB's (Duce and Stephen) and piled on the points going away. DCIAC has now lost 2 in a row - to fall to 4-6, and Dylan has now won 3 in a row - to improve to 6-4.

OJ Santiago sat this one out while making a court appearance in LA. Ask
Jeeves filled in. This game was some serious Monday night madness.
Keyshawn scored and Hall had a FG and 3 XP's to tie Vinatieri's FG and
the Bladerunners' 9 point lead. But then Vinatieri tacked on 2 more XP's
- as Bladrunners pulled away 14-12.

Robust Romanians 48
Ferocious Underwear 42
Wang got lucky with Pittman, Mitchell, and Kris Brown, but FU took its 6th straight double-zero at the WR slots. Gannon was obviously motivated by Wang's disparaging remarks in WIR #8 - as he torched the FU secondary for 4 TD's. CMartin's 36 yard TD run towards the end of the 1st half on Monday night sealed the deal for the Robust Romanians. The scrub loss drops Wang to 0-3 in scrub games - and was the 3rd loss in a row for FU. Vesh has won 7 of his last 8. Wang should have drafted the JAX D instead of Plummer in the 2nd round.

Stan's 4-game winning streak came to a screeching halt as Jim Miller (who?!?) single-handedly drubbed EFH. For Stan, Brunell returned to his non-scoring ways - and perhaps the clock has struck midnight for Olandis. In addition to Miller's 18, Wally also got points from the return of #1 Beagle WR Moulds.

Kitna for Moulds:
When Kevin of DCIAC first mentioned that he desired a WR on the order of Eric Moulds for Jon Kitna, the RFL Gurus mocked him. However... look at what Clark was able to do: trade Rich Gannon for Antonio Freeman. Vesh needed a serviceable QB and had a spare RB to give up. Clark received Errict Rhett for Gannon.
Ali basically does not have a #1 RB on his roster (especially when Biakabutuka recovers and bumps Lane back to #2), so Ali is banking on the fact that Rhett will more than make up for the difference between Freeman and Ike Hilliard.
The end results... Clark added Freeman to his roster for a his Brett Favre backup. Vesh upgraded from Doug Pederson to Gannon for his #3 RB. Ali upgraded from James Stewart to Rhett - while downgrading from Freeman to Hilliard.
So don't give up hope yet, Kevin. I think there are at least 3 teams who could use a starting QB of Kitna's caliber - especially now that Galloway is there to take some balls to THE HOUSE. You might not be able to directly get the WR you're looking for in the 1st trade, but you can always follow Clark's example.

* RFL Postseason Award Frontrunners *
*************************************
RFL MVP:
Peyton Manning (Kevin) - currently #1 in QB points, and 5th overall.
Kurt Warner (Wang) - *would* be #1 in QB points 103-79 over Manning if
Wang hadn't stuck to Jake "The Fake" Plummer at the start of the season.
Stephen Davis (Dylan) - currently #1 in RB points, and 2nd overall -
only 5 points behind Marvin Harrison.
Marvin Harrison (Tim) - currently #1 in WR points and #1 overall.
Isaac Bruce (Vesh) - currently #2 among WR's, 23 points behind Harrison
and 6 points ahead of Cris Carter.
Wesley Walls (Vesh) - currently 42 points ahead of Shannon Sharpe.
Mike Hollis (Brodz) - #1 in PK points, 3rd overall.
Steal of the Draft:
John Kasay (JoePa, 12th round) - the unexpected stumbling of Opie
Cunningham makes this pick all that more crucial for the Black Sox.
Errict Rhett (Vesh, 11th) - Vesh traded this 11th rounder for his
Testaverde replacement (Gannon). Clark used Rhett to get Antonio
Freeman.
Olindo Mare (Wang, 10th) - Mare is leading the NFL in scoring, but Wang
used Wade Richey for 4 games - and now Kris Brown for 1.
Jeff George (Cals, 9th) - Why did Cals drop George?!? George is now a
steal for Brodz.
Stephen Davis (Dylan, 8th) - Dylan nabbed the #1 RB in the League in the
8th round... just after Fred Lane, K A-Jabbar, Madre Hill, and Terry
Kirby.
Bust of the Draft:
For purposes of this discussion, players knocked out due to injury were
not considered.
Randall Cunningham (Gary, 1st round) - Randall has 36 points, but he
lost his grip on the most explosive passing O in the NFL.
Adrian Murrell (Gary, 2nd) - 3 points in 8 games.
Joey Galloway (Brian, 2nd) - dropped by Brian in Week 5; now poised to
score big for Kevin.
JJ Stokes (Brian, 3rd) - one shock was that JJ was drafted ahead of
Rice; the 2nd shock is that JJ is only 12 points behind Rice - in 2
fewer games.
Jerry Rice (3rd) - 12 points in 7 games. A healthy scratch in the last 2
games - and rightfully so.
Pickup of the Year:
Kurt Warner (Wang, Week 0.5) - maybe more QB's should learn the ropes in
arena football!
Albert Connell (Dylan, 1) - productive WR in high-scoring Redskin O.
Tyrone Wheatley (Brodz, 1) - "found" himself in Oakland after being a
bust in NY and Miami.
Jeff George (Brodz, 1) - Cals' surprising drop is now Brodz' ace QB.
Brett Conway (Tim, 2) - PK of high-scoring Redskin O fell into Tim's
lap.
GM of the Year:
The talents that make an RFL GM of the Year include being a strong
drafter, having a keen eye for talent in the free agent pool, making
FAIR trades that benefit his team, and demonstrating his team's
studliness by posting big numbers and W's between the white lines.
Joebob (Men in Brown) - Joebob had a very strong draft, and his W-L
record at the end of the year should justify consideration here. Any
doofus could have picked Terrell Davis with the #1 pick. Only a true
guru could overcome the loss of TD and be primed to inflict pain in the
postseason.
Tim (Y2K Bugs) - Tim was also regarded as having a strong draft, and has
picked up a few solid players via free agency (Linton, Bradford,
BConway). The Bugs should finish in the top 4 in the regular season, and
they are scoring at the 4th highest clip.
Vesh (Romanians) - Vesh did not receive acclaim for his draft, but the
quality of his picks is shining through. He was able to deal 3rd RB
Rhett to replace Testaverde's sub Pederson with Gannon. And the
Romanians are considered (along with SLAB) to be a Steamroller and
Aglione Bowl frontrunner.
Brodz (SLAB) - Brodz received mixed reviews for his draft - most notably
admitting to accidentally drafting Cris Carter when he meant to pick
Keyshawn. But by shrewdly replacing Griese with Jeff George and adding
Wheatley to the mix, SLAB is THE current favorite for all the postseason
hardware.
Cals (WOB) - Other than Cals' own preseason poll (where he picked
himself 2nd), the other 2 "experts" had WOB ranked about 7th. The fact
that WOB is currently 6-4 speaks volumes for Cals' guru-ness.
Cals now has a tough road to hoe, so we'll see how the Beavers can
finish.
JoePa (Black Sox) - JoePa picked Edgerrin, Ricky Williams, and Air
McNair in the 1st 3 rounds of the draft - high-risk high-reward. The Sox
are currently 6-4 and are shaping up as a team to avoid
in the postseason. The WIR Editor sees a brighter future for the Sox as
compared to the Beavers.
Dylan (UWSSM) - UWSSM has been among the League's leading scorers since
Week 1. An 0-3 scrub record has this team at 6-4 instead of their
rightful 9-1. The loss of Emmitt for 3-5 weeks will hurt. Dylan's GM
skills will now be under the FoxScope.
